On 27 August 2026, Skills4Nuclear (S4N) Project Coordinator Teodora Vollmer participated in the Doctoral Education Network 2026 Seminar (DENSE), to give a keynote lecture on the S4N project.
Following a brief presentation of the project’s goals, partners and work package structure, Teodora highlighted the project’s most significant outputs, and listed some deliverables currently published, or being developed as part of the project, including:
- Guidelines for conducting national nuclear workforce assessments
- A toolkit of ideas to attract (young) people to the sector
- Reskilling & Upskilling opportunities
- Courses that can be used for a variety of nuclear disciplines
- Map of regional nuclear skills hub
- A nuclear skills strategy
Teodora then detailed the outcomes of two Deliverables developed within the project: Deliverable 2.1 and Deliverable 4.3.
She first gave an overview of the conclusions of Deliverable 2.1, where 21 workforce assessments across national, European and adjacent strategic sectors were studied to identify best practices and gaps. Specific recommendations were then developed to inform future workforce assessments. These include the need to harmonise classifications, institutionalise assessments, create shared governance, and link skills to policy in order to build a future talent pipeline. These recommendations will inform a Nuclear Skills Strategy, developed as part of the S4N project.
Concluding her intervention, Teodora detailed the findings of Deliverable 4.3, which explores Vocational Education and Training (VET) opportunities for the nuclear sector. She specifically highlighted the important of developing VET pathways for nuclear professions, and noted that many nuclear-sector jobs are not purely nuclear, but are transferable occupations that need the right level of nuclearisation.
Following Teodora’s presentation, a Q&A session allowed to explore questions related to flexibility of training and gender imbalance in the nuclear sector.
